Moscow: What to See and When to Go

The Kremlin, Red Square, and Zaryadye: your first day in the centre

The first day usually shapes itself: start at Manezhnaya Square and the Alexander Garden, then walk to the Kremlin gates, cross Red Square to Saint Basil’s Cathedral, and from there head to Zaryadye. It is only a kilometre and a half on foot from Manezhnaya Square to the floating bridge, but you will stop often along the way.

Inside the Kremlin, buy a separate ticket for the Armoury Chamber and Cathedral Square. The Cathedrals of the Dormition, the Archangel, and the Annunciation were added to the UNESCO list back in 1990.

GUM, with its 250-metre façade from 1893, works both as a passage to Nikolskaya Street and as a place to wait out the rain.

Zaryadye Park opened on 9 September 2017 on the site of the demolished Rossiya Hotel. The floating bridge with its V-shaped cantilever extends 70 metres over the Moskvoretskaya Embankment — and all of it without a single support.

Since October 2025, the park has hosted the «Matryoshka of Moscow» media installation: in the evenings it turns into a multimedia show.

If you have an hour left, head down into the underground museum beneath the hill and walk along the renovated Moskvoretskaya Embankment.

The Boulevard Ring, Patriki, and Zamoskvorechye

The Boulevard Ring is a pedestrian horseshoe running from Gogolevsky to Yauzsky Boulevard. Along the way you will see the monument to Gogol, the Nikitsky Gates, Tverskaya, and Chistye Prudy. In three or four hours of unhurried walking you will cross ten boulevards. They are lined with book stalls, open stages, and linden alleys.

Inside the horseshoe are Patriarch’s Ponds and Malaya Bronnaya Street. There are plenty of third-wave coffee shops and bars here, and the evenings can get crowded.

People come to Zamoskvorechye for the art. The historical building of the Tretyakov Gallery in Lavrushinsky Lane is home to Vasnetsov’s «Bogatyrs» and Surikov’s «Boyarina Morozova». The New Tretyakov on Krymsky Val showcases 20th-century and contemporary art.

Across the river are Gorky Park, where you can rent gear and take a boat out, and the Muzeon Park of Arts with its open-air sculpture collection.

Further down the river are the Sparrow Hills with the observation deck by the main building of Moscow State University. The balcony opens up views of Luzhniki, the Moscow City towers, and the Novodevichy Convent. The convent has been active since 1524 and was added to the UNESCO list in 2004.

VDNKh, space, and the metro as a museum

VDNKh deserves at least half a day — it lies away from the centre, and you can reach it from Teatralnaya station in 15 minutes by metro. The exhibition opened in 1939. Over the past decade the pavilions of the Soviet republics have been carefully restored. Nearby you will find the Museum of Cosmonautics, set inside the stylobate of the 107-metre «Conquerors of Space» monument, the Moskvarium, and the entrance to the Botanical Garden.

On the way back you can ride the metro and see several remarkable stations:

  • «Mayakovskaya» — won the grand prize at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York;
  • «Novoslobodskaya» — famous for its stained glass;
  • «Komsomolskaya» — known for the mosaics by Korin;
  • «Ploshchad Revolyutsii» — where the nose of the bronze border guard’s dog has been rubbed to a shine.

The metro’s Big Circle Line was closed into a loop in 2023. It is the largest metro ring in the world, 70 kilometres long. The line cuts travel time between outlying districts almost in half.

Seasons and festivals in 2026

Summer in Moscow is reliably warm: in June, July, and August daytime temperatures stay around +23…+24 °C, and at night they drop to about +14 °C.

From 30 May to 6 September the city hosts the «Summer in Moscow 2026» festival. It spans more than 500 venues with concerts, sports events, and historical reenactments.

From 6 June to 5 July the Zaryadye Concert Hall hosts the music festival of the same name. And on 20 June the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve will host the «Afisha Picnic».

September is the best month for a trip to Moscow. Daytime temperatures are still warm — around +17 °C. The theatre season opens at this time, and on the first Saturday of the month the city celebrates City Day. In 2026 it falls on 5 September.

In winter, Moscow temperatures hover around −2 °C during the day and −5…−8 °C at night. The city centre is decorated with lights along Tverskaya and Nikolskaya streets. A rink with a view of the Kremlin operates next to GUM, and 30 venues host the «Journey to Christmas» festival.

May and September are particularly popular with travellers: in these months you can avoid the summer heat and the high prices typical of the New Year holidays.

Getting there and where to stay

Which airport is closest

Vnukovo is about 30 km from the Kremlin and has fewer flights than Sheremetyevo. The Aeroexpress runs to any of the four airports — Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, Zhukovsky — from Belorussky, Paveletsky, or Kievsky railway stations, with a journey of 35–50 minutes.

The Sapsan from Saint Petersburg arrives at Leningradsky station in four hours; two more stations stand next to it on Komsomolskaya Square — Yaroslavsky (suburban trains to Sergiev Posad take an hour and a half) and Kazansky. The most convenient way around the city is the metro — more than 260 stations on 16 lines, paid for with a Troika card. Car sharing also works well: over 30,000 vehicles from Delimobil, Yandex Drive, and Citydrive operate on the streets.

Moscow has more than 2,400 hotels — the Moscow hotels catalogue lets you filter by district and price. At the low end of the popular options, Winewood Moscow Lounge Hotel near Kursky station starts at 6,500 ₽ a night with a 9.8 rating on Moya Bron. At the top end, Ararat Park Hyatt near the Bolshoi Theatre runs around 38,000 ₽. A typical four-star inside the Garden Ring costs 8,000–11,000 ₽: for example, V Hotel Tverskaya on Tverskaya Street starts at 7,700 ₽. If your trip is for business or you want something cheaper, look at Reutov just outside the MKAD — it has 25 hotels and a quick connection to Novokosino station.
